'Old Boys' Alumni Match & Formal Dinner 2022

It is with pleasure that I invite all alumni of Cambridge University Badminton Club to the 'Old Boys' Alumni Match & Formal Dinner, to be held on Saturday 14th May 2022.

The ‘Old Boys’ match has been celebrated in one form or another since the early 2000s, however the 2020 event was the first occasion on which we included a formal dinner hosted at a Cambridge College: Fitzwilliam. We received some very positive feedback from current students and alumni alike, so will be seeking to hold a formal dinner once more, this time in the stunning Selwyn College. This is also the first major alumni event since collaboration with the CU alumni office has allowed us to re-establish contact with hundreds of new alumni, so I am very excited about the potential attendance.

Once again you are warmly invited to bring your partner, friend, or fellow badminton player to both the match and the dinner. The combination of badminton, excellent food and company, and sightseeing and reminiscing in Cambridge has the potential for a highly memorable and enjoyable weekend for both of you.

‘Old Boys’ Match

The match will be held between 15:00-18:00 at the University Sports Centre on Saturday 14th May. It is an excellent opportunity to rekindle old rivalries, have one more rematch, or try your hand against that captain that you never could beat.

We have 4-8 courts available and the match will mostly be played as an informal club night, but we will keep a tally of wins whenever 'youth' takes on 'experience', so that there will be an overall winner!

We ask for a contribution of £9 towards the cost of courts and shuttles, paid by card on the day.

Formal Dinner

We are delighted to offer a 3-course formal dinner (menu) for alumni and current members at Selwyn College. The dinner will be held on the same day, Saturday 14th May, with a 19:00 reception for a 19:30 start.

The cost is £45 for alumni and £40 for recent alumni (graduated 2019 or later), to be paid upon registration.

Accommodation

While most alumni tend to prefer to organise their own accommodation either with friends still living in Cambridge or in hotels, we also try to offer an alternative low-cost option.

In the spirit of the Varsity match, in which players traditionally host the opposition in their College rooms, recent alumni may request accommodation in the rooms of current members, at no cost. Alternatively, alumni may request accommodation in a College junior guest room, for which the cost is usually £30-60. These options cannot be guaranteed but we will endeavour to notify you soon after your registration if we have found a room for you.

Registration

To register for the event, please fill out the Google form below before the 27th April, on which date registration will end.

If you would like to bring a partner, friend or badminton player as a +1, please fill out a separate form for them. There is a field to indicate who you are attending with.

You are welcome to attend either the match or the dinner, or both. Modifications, cancellations and refunds are possible up to the closing date. Modifications after the closing date may not be possible but feel free to enquire with the Alumni Officer. We are naturally more flexible regarding the match than the dinner.

This sheet lists those alumni who have already registered (and consented to sharing their name), to help you coordinate with alumni of your time!

Queries

Please direct any queries about the event to the Alumni Officer, Ben Wharton.
